Shannon Stokes graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor of Health Science. She travelled across Europe while working on her blog, before having her first child Jack and starting up her own clinic Mums and Bubs Nutrition Clinic, which is very much focussed on Fertility, pregnancy, breastfeeding support, post natal health, babies and children’s health. She had her second child Imogen 18 months later and co-authored two baby and toddler feeding eBooks!
Being a mum is a really big deal. In order to achieve a pregnancy, literally two worlds have to collide, sparks of life flicker and the epic journey of pregnancy begins. This tummy bug takes everything from you and miraculously turns into a living and breathing human being! Wow! Being a mum means sharing your body, your food, and your DNA. And it doesn’t stop there. They literally take it all…. even your smoothie in the morning.
SO pregnancy can be a time of increased demand, then there is the nighttime waking, the feeding routines, the round the clock nappy changes and then throw in some crazy hormones to boot. Being a mum is not a job, it’s a change in life, a whole new routine. So mummas, your body has literally been through the ringer and you are more than likely pretty exhausted and depleted. SO how can we turn this all around?

4AA29F38-B8B2-43E2-BC0D-21B78FB7C966-Edit (1)It is so important to NOURISH our ‘mums’, nutritionally and emotionally. We need a balance of foot rubs (with AESOP foot cream, essential!) cups of tea on offer, at least weekly to be asked ‘how can I make your day better?’ with follow through and of course Peanut Butter on toast. We need to make sure the mums out there are eating frequently and eating the right foods. Eating a mixture of Protein rich foods, carbohydrates and good fats, these macronutrients are essential for growth, energy production and fuelling your body.

Sometimes it can be virtually impossible to eat everything that our body needs and we may not get all of the nutrients promised from it either. Perhaps a good multiV, some fish oil and a probiotic might be essential. But on one hand, there are some foods that are a powerhouse for mums on the go.

Smoothies.
It’s not a fad thing, it’s a game changer. You can throw in so much nutrition into one smoothie and drink it one handed whilst singing a rendition of ‘row row row your boat’.

Here are some of my top Mummas Smoothies. – a prescription for mums!

Boob Lovin’ – Breastfeeding Smoothie

This smoothie is very close to my heart and one I used all the time. Whilst I was very lucky to have had an abundant supply of milk, I was sure to look after myself and make sure I kept up the calories to ensure the boobs were topped up at all times.
– 1-2 Frozen Bananas
– 1/2 Cup of Oats
– 1tbs Fresh Ground Flax Seeds
– 2 Tbsp. Raw Honey
– 500mls Almond Milk
– 1 Tbsp. Mayver’s Peanut Butter
– 1 Tbsp. Brewer’s Yeast
– 1/2 Tsp Cinnamon
– 1/4 Tsp Vanilla Extract
– (Add Ice If Needed)
Boob loving smoothie to help build supply. Ingredients are similar to lactation cookies but this is a much healthier option. Give those beautiful mumma boobs some nutrients including essential b vitamins, magnesium, selenium, protein, complex carbohydrates, to assist in promoting milk. One of the toughest jobs ever! You are amazing!!

Coco Crazy Mental Health Smoothie

– 1 Frozen Banana
– 4 Pitted Medjool Dates
– 2 Tbsp. Shredded Coconut
– 1 tbs Mayver’s Peanut Butter
– 500ml Coconut Water (Chilled)
– 2 Tbsp. Cacao Powder (Heaped)
– 1 Tablespoon Extra Virgin Coconut Oil.
Tastes good, has medium chain fatty acids for mental health, cacao for mental clarity and has a big whack of magnesium, the dates for sweetness and added magnesium and essential minerals. The good old days from the cashews also help with mood and stabilising blood sugar.

Glow And Grow – Pregnancy Smoothie

– 1/2 Avocado
– 1 Frozen Banana
– 1 Handful Spinach
– 1 tbs Mayver’s Almond, Brazil and Cashew Nut butter
– 2 Tbs Maple Syrup
– 500ml Almond Milk
– 1/4 Tsp Cinnamon
– 1/4 Tsp Vanilla Extract
A delicious smoothie that satisfies in so so many ways! Blood sugar stabilising, full of antioxidants and essential fats, smooth and creamy and really hits that Preggo craving spot. It helps to nourish that growing
child and leave mum glowing.

SO beautiful mums out there, ask for a foot rub, go and buy some special foot rub cream (as I said earlier this is essential!) and look after you! This is a pretty crazy cool ride you are on and there is no time like now to nourish yourself and be the best version of you and the best mum you can be!
